Ginkelse Heide

The Ginkelse Heide was also known as “Dropzone Y” during Operation Market Garden. Paratroopers from the British 4th Parachute Brigade would be dropped here on the 18th of September 1944. A Scottish Battalion from the dropzone near Wolfheze did not manage to secure Dropzone Y, this meant that the Paratroopers would be fired upon while jumping from their planes.

On the Ginkelse Heide there are also remains from a WW1 Belgian Refugee camp, since The Netherlands was neutral in the 1st WW a lot of Belgians (about 1 million) would flee to the Netherlands.
